FAQ'S
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this training cover insurance and billing considerations?
This program provides general education and practice-design guidance related to group therapy models. Because insurance policies vary by payer, state, and contract, this training does not offer payer-specific billing instructions.
That said, the program addresses:
· Common insurance considerations related to group therapy
· How group therapy is typically structured in private-pay vs. insurance-based practices
· Documentation and informed consent principles that support ethical practice
· Questions to ask your insurance panel or billing specialist
Participants are encouraged to verify coverage, coding, and reimbursement requirements with their specific payers and licensing board.
Can group therapy be private-pay if I accept insurance for individual sessions?
Yes. Many clinicians operate hybrid practices in which individual therapy may be insurance-based while group therapy is offered as private-pay.
This program discusses:
· Ethical considerations for offering private-pay groups
· How to communicate group pricing transparently
· How to avoid dual-relationship or coercion concerns
· How to clearly present group therapy as an option—not a requirement
The focus is on client choice, clarity, and informed consent.
How is confidentiality handled in group therapy?
Confidentiality is a foundational component of ethical group therapy.
This program covers:
· How to clearly explain confidentiality limits in group settings
· How to establish group agreements and expectations
· What confidentiality can and cannot be guaranteed
· How to address breaches or concerns if they arise
· How to document group consent appropriately
While therapists are bound by professional confidentiality standards, group members are educated on their shared responsibility to respect the privacy of others.
How does this program address ethics and scope of practice?
Ethics and scope of practice are central to this training.
The program emphasizes:
· Clinical decision-making when recommending group vs. individual therapy
· Appropriate screening and exclusion criteria
· Maintaining role clarity (therapy vs. psychoeducation vs. coaching)
· Avoiding scope creep or overextension
· Practicing within licensure and professional guidelines
This training is designed to support ethical, clinically sound group therapy—not shortcuts or inappropriate service models.
Is this program appropriate for license-eligible or pre-licensed clinicians?
Yes. The material is appropriate for licensed and license-eligible clinicians, provided that participants practice in accordance with their supervision requirements and state regulations.
The program encourages:
· Consultation with supervisors when implementing new group models
· Adherence to licensure rules regarding independent practice
· Thoughtful, supervised implementation when applicable
Will this program teach me how to “sell” group therapy?
This program does not teach sales tactics or pressure-based marketing.
Instead, it teaches:
· How to clinically explain the benefits of group therapy
· How to recommend group therapy appropriately and ethically
· How to answer client questions with confidence and clarity
· How to present group therapy as a valid, effective treatment option
The goal is alignment—not persuasion.
Do I need prior experience running groups?
No. This program is designed for both clinicians who are new to group therapy and those who have tried groups before with mixed results.
You’ll receive:
· Clear frameworks and structures
· Practical scripts and examples
· Guidance for common challenges
· Tools you can implement immediately
Is this program compliant with licensing board standards?
This program is educational in nature and is designed to complement—not replace—your professional training, clinical judgment, and licensure requirements.
Participants are responsible for:
· Practicing within their scope of licensure
· Following state and board-specific regulations
· Applying the material in a manner consistent with ethical guidelines
What if I’m worried about burnout even with groups?
That concern is valid—and addressed directly.
This program is specifically designed to:
· Reduce emotional overload per hour worked
· Improve structure and predictability
· Help you choose group models that fit your capacity
· Prevent overextension and compassion fatigue
Group therapy should protect your energy, not drain it.
❓ DO I HAVE TO BE DBT-CERTIFIED TO RUN THIS GROUP?
No.
Full certification through the Linehan Board of Certification is required only if you are advertising or practicing comprehensive DBT, which includes:
Individual DBT therapy
Skills training group
Phone coaching
Consultation team
Adherence monitoring
This program teaches you how to run a DBT-informed skills group, not a comprehensive DBT program.
There is a difference.
As a licensed clinician, you are ethically permitted to teach skills you have been trained in, provided you practice within your scope of competence.
❓ WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN “DBT-INFORMED” AND “COMPREHENSIVE DBT”?
Comprehensive DBT is an intensive, multi-component treatment model typically delivered in higher levels of care.
A DBT-informed skills group focuses specifically on:
Emotion regulation
Distress tolerance
Interpersonal effectiveness
Mindfulness
You are teaching structured coping tools — not claiming formal model adherence.
Clear positioning protects you.
❓ IS IT ETHICAL TO TEACH DBT SKILLS IF I’M NOT CERTIFIED?
Ethical codes emphasize competence, not certification.
If you have:
Taken DBT trainings or CE courses
Studied the model
Received supervision or consultation
Understand the principles and applications
You are operating within ethical guidelines as long as you represent your services accurately.
This program also provides positioning language so you can describe your group clearly and professionally.
❓ WILL I BE MISREPRESENTING MYSELF LEGALLY?
Not if you use accurate language.
You should not claim:
“Certified DBT Therapist” (unless you are)
“Comprehensive DBT Program” (unless you offer all components)
You can confidently say:
“DBT-informed skills training group”
“Dialectical Behavior Therapy-based skills group”
“Emotion regulation group based on DBT principles”
Precision in language eliminates risk.
❓ WHAT IF I’VE NEVER RUN A GROUP BEFORE?
Perfect.
This program gives you:
Structured weekly outlines
Teaching scripts
Retention framework
Enrollment scripts
Launch roadmap
You don’t need prior group experience.
You need structure.
❓ WHAT IF I TRIED A GROUP BEFORE AND IT DIDN’T WORK?
Most group failures are not clinical failures.
They’re structural failures.
Common mistakes include:
Underpricing
Weak positioning
No retention strategy
Open enrollment without containment
Lack of clear outcome promise
This system solves those variables.
❓ WHAT IF MY STATE BOARD HAS SPECIFIC RULES?
Every state regulates licensure differently.
You are responsible for practicing within your state’s scope and advertising guidelines.
This curriculum teaches skills and structure — it does not override state law.
When in doubt, consult your board or liability insurance provider.
❓ CAN I CUSTOMIZE THIS TO MY NICHE (TEENS, ADHD, PARENT COACHING, ETC.)?
Yes.
The structure remains the same.
The examples, activities, and framing can be adapted to:
Teens
ADHD clients
Parents
Anxiety groups
Executive functioning
Emotion dysregulation
The income model works across niches.
❓ WHAT IF I’M WORRIED ABOUT FILLING THE GROUP?
You’ll receive:
Referral scripts
Positioning language
A 14-day launch plan
Enrollment psychology guidance
Most therapists don’t struggle with content.
They struggle with enrollment structure.
That’s included.
❓ HOW QUICKLY CAN I REALISTICALLY IMPLEMENT THIS?
Many clinicians launch within 2–4 weeks.
One full group cycle can often cover the cost of the program.
After that, every cohort becomes scalable revenue.
❓ IS THIS ONLY ABOUT MONEY?
No.
This is about:
Sustainability
Burnout prevention
Clinical leverage
Increased client practice and peer modeling
The income is a byproduct of better structure.
